Jay Leno NBC Finale Date Is Set for 2009
Jay Leno was the surprise guest at the announcement of his departure date from NBC when he turned up in disguise on Monday to ask the first few questions at a news conference with the NBC Entertainment co-chairmen, Ben Silverman and Marc Graboff.
Mr. Graboff then broke the real news that Mr. Leno’s last night on “The “Tonight Show” would be May 29, 2009, a Friday, with Conan O’Brien taking over the show on the following Monday, June 1.
Graboff said Jay had come to the NBC executives after an article appeared in USA Today in which he seemed to be saying angrily that he would be gone from NBC when his contract expired. “I think Jay felt a little bad about it,” Mr. Graboff said. “He wanted to make sure it was clear that this was a cooperative thing. Jay was part of this from the get-go.”
“It has been cooperative and collegial, and his coming here today was a very clear message from him that he’s not bitter and that he wants to go out on top,” Mr. Graboff said.
