Hancock saves the life of a public-relations executive played by Jason Bateman, who embarks on an image makeover for the down-and-out superhero.
Industry watchers are waiting to see if “Hancock” will prove to be a misstep for Mr. Smith. Early reviews so fare have been all over the map. Some see “Hancock” bringing a much-needed freshening not only to the superhero genre but more broadly to films laden with computer-generated effects. Others suggest the emphasis on reinvention cuts into the film’s enjoyability.
Here’s some “Hancock” reviews written so far:
* David Denby in the New Yorker: “‘Hancock’ suggests new visual directions and emotional tonalities for pop. It’s by far the most enjoyable big movie of the summer.” [New Yorker]
* Los Angeles Times: “It’s a strange feeling to see the summer’s most promising premise self-destruct into something bizarre and unsatisfying, but that is the “Hancock” experience.” [LA Times]
* USA Today: “What could have been a perfectly enjoyable blend of comedy and action blows up in our faces trying to be a heavier, larger-than-life romance with historical, spiritual and sci-fi implications.” [USA Today]
* Robert Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times: “… ‘Hancock’ is a lot of fun, if perhaps a little top-heavy with stuff being destroyed.” [Chicago Sun-Times]
* Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: “…a welcome departure in this summer of superheroes, although not always a well-executed one.” [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette]
