Sen. Ted Kennedy has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and will remain hospitalized for at least several additional days as he and his family determine his treatment options.

Senator Kennedy suffered a seizure last Saturday and has since been hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

ABC News’ Bret Hovell and Z. Bryon Wolf Reported that politicians on both sides of the aisle reacted with sadness and determined optimism to the news that Kennedy has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

Fighting back tears, Sen. Chris Dodd, described as Kennedy’s closest friend in the Senate, insisted, “We’re confident he’s going to be back.”

In a statement released to the press, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Senator Kennedy and his family. We hope and pray his doctors will be able to effectively treat his condition and that he will experience a full recovery. I have described Ted Kennedy as the last lion in the Senate, and I have held that view because he remains the single most effective member of the Senate.”

“He has had no further seizures, remains in good overall condition and is up and walking around the hospital,” Drs. Lee Schwamm and Larry Ronan said in a joint statement released by the hospital.

“The usual course of treatment includes combinations of various forms of radiation and chemotherapy,” they said. “Decisions regarding the best course of treatment for Sen. Kennedy will be determined after further testing and analysis.”

We pray for Senator Kennedy and wish him the best of luck with this terrible situation.
