It has been announced that actor Jeremy Piven has abruptly left the hit Broadway revival of David Mamet’s “Speed-the-Plow,” blaming a high mercury count, Daily Variety reported in its Thursday edition. The Hollywood satire opened to strong reviews in October and Piven had been expected to perform his role as a foul-mouthed studio executive until late February.

Even with Jeremy leaving the set, David Mamet is skeptical.

“I talked to Jeremy on the phone, and he told me that he discovered that he had a very high level of mercury,” Mamet said. “So my understanding is that he is leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer.”

The show will still go on through February, Mamet said. Replacing Piven are Norbert Leo Butz, who begins Dec. 23, and William H. Macy, who joins the cast Jan. 13.

“The good news is that some really great actors will be helping out and stepping in, which to me is a sign of great heroism and friendship,” he said.

Dumb And Dumber director Bobby Farrelly was reportedly arrested earlier this month (DEC08), after fighting with police officers outside a nightclub in Vermont.

Not a very smart move.

According to TMZ.com, Farrelly - one half of the Farrelly Brothers directing duo - was picked up in Stowe and charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Farrelly, 50, was released on $500 bond.

The film maker’s next project is a comedy movie starring the Jonas Brothers, called Walter the Farting Dog - about a flatulent pet pooch.

Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg is creating and will star in a new science fiction mini-series that will be broadcast only online.

They show is set to begin streaming on 15 January (08) on Fearnet.com.

Six five-minute weekly installments will follow Goldberg’s character coming to terms with her fears.

It won’t be the Ghost actress’s first venture into the sci-fi world - she appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation in the late 1980s.

According to other another partygoer, O’Day was heard happily telling pals about her new girl-on-girl romance. Earlier this week the “Hairspray” starlet showed up to SKY Group’s launch of the BlackBerry Pearl Flip at Highbar and later at NASCAR’s party at Marquee with a woman she introduced as her girlfriend. Back in August O’Day was also pap-snapped locking lips with New York socialite/heiress, Lydia Hearst.

The NFL’s New York Giants are not amused by fan Sondra Fortunato’s decision to show up for a game in a skimpy Santa Claus outfit showing a bit too much cleavage for their liking.

Sondra Fortunato, who the New York Post describes as having a penchant for risque outfits, had a bit of a run-in with stadium security.

“Last Sunday, Sondra, whose niece, Paula, is divorcing Sumner Redstone, arrived at the Meadowlands in a tiara, fishnets, a Santa outfit, a bathing-suit bottom and high-heeled boots. “Nothing was showing,” she insisted. “You couldn’t even see my underwear. I don’t flash!”

She carried a suitcase containing Christmas presents, and held a pair of 11-by-17 signs. One read, “Go Giants.” The other, “Have a No Guns Christmas.”

Then, Sondra was escorted to the security office - “where all the alcoholics and drunks and people ejected from the stadium stay.”

The Giants insist she was detained for violating the no-sign policy, and not because of what she was wearing.

Will Smith, during a recent interview, expressed that he is glad he plays a depressed, suicidal tax officer in new film Seven Pounds - because it made him take greater control over his own destiny.

The Hancock actor stars as an IRS agent who is racked with guilt about his past mistakes in the upcoming drama.

And he admits the role has made him behave more cautiously in case fate deals him a tragic blow.

He tells USA Today, “That’s one of the elements that attracted me to this idea - how much control you can have over your life but how much you don’t have once you relinquish it.

“I make choices in my life after working on this film. I found myself walking down the stairs and it’s raining, and I found myself grabbing extra-hard on the railing. Just think, one slip - and that’s it. You have to be conscious. You don’t have control after you’ve set these dominoes in motion. Your control point is before you make this crucial mistake.”

It is being reported that former “American Idol” contestant Paris Bennett has given birth to a daughter named Egypt.

Bennett was in labor for five hours before her 5-pound, 15-ounce baby was born Monday.

Thankfully, the first-time mother is doing well after giving birth to her first child.

In a news release, the 20-year-old says she’s “so excited to finally see my little angel.” Bennett adds, “Man, does she have lungs on her. I guess she’s gearing up to be the next American Idol.”

Bennett is slated to release her first Christmas CD, “A Royal Christmas,” on October 14th.
